Exo 31:14
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

Q - Why don't we have the death penalty for breaking the Sabbath today?
A - "Israel was a theocracy at that time and God was establishing his laws for the people to follow. Therefore, the penalty for breaking the Sabbath was very severe in order to maintain discipline. Today we obey the secular authorities not a theocratic government. (Rom 13:1) Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. (Rom 13:2) Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. "
